[Review] PHANTOM MINDS – Mizuki Nana (Magical Girl Lyrical NANOHA the movie 1st OP + insert)

not-so-fail press edition this time around :p

And it’s finally here!! Took reeeeaaally long this time for some reason… Got shipped on Monday, arrived the next Monday… Our delivery service people are still in holiday mood or something apparently o.O Anyway, not gonna make this very long this time. Gonna try leaving this as a more-decent-than-usual review ^^;

First off, we’ll analyze song by song:

01. PHANTOM MINDS

★劇場版「魔法少女リリカルなのは The MOVIE 1st」主題歌
★日本テレビ系「MUSIC FIGHTER」POWER PLAY
作詞:水樹奈々 作曲:吉木絵里子 編曲:陶山隼

Just realized it got used for MUSIC FIGHTER as well… Erm, yeah, the song. It’s kinda average Nana, but with a slightly different approach guitar-wise. It’s a nice listen, but what’s nicer is Nana’s totally emotional live version of it seen at Music Japan anison SP2, so I suppose this song can just join the rest of Nana’s “live version PWNS the recorded one” songs ^^ Btw, don’t take this too seriously if you don’t want, but my main reason for liking the song is ’cause it sounds like a love song from Fate to Nanoha =x No! I did not just say that!

Oh, and the AWSM hip-swaying PV:

Only the CM available ’cause failtube fails to keep the full version of the PV >_>

02. Don’t be long

★劇場版「魔法少女リリカルなのは The MOVIE 1st」挿入歌
作詞・作曲・編曲:矢吹俊郎

Average, forgettable, but not a bad listen. The bass in it is fun, I’m pretty sure Ryuu-tan will like jumping all around while playing this live :p

03. Song Communication

★TOKYO FM「水樹奈々のMの世界」エンディングテーマ
作詞:ゆうまお 作曲・編曲:藤間仁(Elements Garden)

Nana’s attempt at a “normal” song, but it doesn’t quite reach the acceptable line. STORIES (from Mugen) was way nicer =x I still smile whenever I hear the “wo wo, wo wo, la la, la la, la la” at the beginning though ^^

04. 十字架のスプレッド

★アーケード版「シャイニング・フォース クロス」テーマソング
作詞・作曲:志倉千代丸 編曲:菊田大介(Elements Garden)

Juujika no Spread. Typical, powerful, Nana game song. My usual pick from her songs, but that’s my own personal choice. I suppose this is the kind of song that we all call “Nana style”; it’s the kind of song that only Nana-chan can pull off this well =D

As a whole, I gotta admit that I prefer the Mugen single over PHANTOM MINDS. This single seems to lack originality, and unfortunately, that’s the path I see Silent Bible following as well, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. Objectively speaking, the single’s average anisong fair (still better than most of the stuff you find out there of course), but for me, I’m more than happy with it (if only for the HAWT cover =x) ^^

Finally, my personal order of preference:

1, PHANTOM MINDS
2, Juujika no Spread
3, Don’t be long
4, Song Communication

Personal preferences are personal, and I’m too lazy to give any reasons for them right now, so let’s just leave it at that for today and look forward to Silent Bible instead 😄 Oh, and only 3 days left for Nana-chan’s birthday AND the release of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A’s -THE BATTLE OF ACES-!!!!!!!

More pics of the single to follow, just because yes. I took them already anyway 😄

open one side

open the other (and a bunch of promo stuff come out as usual :p)

They really like that fence...

P.S. Anime News Network just announced that PHANTOM MINDS RANKED 1ST ON ORICON WEEKLY!!!!!!!! banzai! Banzai!! BANZAI!!! Yeah, just as expected~ =3

"Nana-samaaaaaaa~"

whaaat? i dont understand your opinion of phantom minds… its actually really different from ALOT of her songs, other then the fact that it has major string support in the background… she actually uses vibrato in the perfect spots and hits high notes normally – (not enka-y) + it just sounds so… in the stars! 😀 it is probably on her top 10 best songs of all time, despite its shortness… also unfortunately this song is among the few album better songs – its not as great live, although more emotional she always seems to have pitch troubles singing the chorus of this song for some reason everytime i go see her and hear it 😦 the only other songs of hers that sound maybe a bit similar in MOOD would be Astrogation and Stay Gold in the aspect of “starriness” while Stay Gold has a stronger chorus weaker verses and Astrogation is way more playful and bouncy all together
