Shangri-la ep 14 (finally) – The plot thickens, Uncle Tarsian.

Everyone is waiting for their Kuniko subs :p

Everyone is waiting for their Kuniko subs :p

YES! Finally! After all this time, my subs are out! YAAAAAY!!! Damn, and here I thought we’d get a late Thursday review as the best case scenario.  Turns out this scenario can be crossed out now, seeing as subs are taking longer and longer to get out, even when it’s Crunchyroll’s (I think).  The other crappy part is that I had to “review” Haruhi’s “latest” episode and two review posts in one day are a bit taxing, especially since Shangri-la is usually getting full reviews.

Anyway, we get a number of interesting info in episode 14.  Sometimes I think they want to push Kuniko to the emo point of no return.  I’m always delighted to see that she eventually returns to her path of GAR ownage.

The episode starts with the people in Duomo waiting for Kuniko to return (first post image).  Kuniko is trying to get inside Atlas to join her troops.  Momoko thinks it’s time for some girl lessons regarding life and we also get Kuniko service (ok almost really but I always like Kuniko’s legs anyway).

I think white is ok if it's Kuniko *nodnod But point noted, any other nice colors?

So they’re finally inside.  Time to rally the troops.  The troops seem rather occupied however, obviously enjoying themselves with some strange jungle forest… yeah right…

... If you see a bald dragon, run...

Takehiko on the other hand seems to have dropped the whole Atlas invasion and gone for a vacation.

You found a really good time to slack…  Anyway, our pink glorious leader has TransMomoko with her so she shouldn’t be in any real bind.  It turns out though that this city uses holographic projections in excess to create virtual environments like the tropical island and the jungle.  It becomes pre-quake Tokyo afterwards, which gives everyone a better sense of direction.  Of course there are other, more pressing matters to attend to.

Use the Force, Kuniko...

OK, so even GAR Kuniko needs a bit more training.

That or you should learn that "rice juice" isn't really juice...

I'll have what she's having...

So after everyone runs around and tries in vain to meet with each other, new information starts to roll in.  See, after that major Tokyo earthquake, the government was unable to repair the huge damages, so then the Atlas Project appeared.  And the multibillionaire who funded the project is none other than Tarsian himself.  The purpose of Atlas though is still not clear.  I mean, Joker has a theory but according to her, the reason Atlas was created…

Of course, that’s not all at all.  Here’s something way bigger here…

Of course there was a third party related to Atlas, but we’ll leave that one for later.  We interrupt this review to bring you loli Karin and her quest for gold!

Kariiiiiiiiiiin \(^^)/

Kariiiiiiiiiiin (^^)/

MEDUSA is becoming increasingly intelligent so Zhang is a bit concerned but neither Klaris nor loli Karin seem to mind that.  The crappy part here is that’s the only Karin appearance this episode >_<.

The episode does make up for it by total Kuniko ownage as she tries to make her way around holographic Atlas.  Kuniko’s GARness gets a boost. (No, crappy Kusanagi NEVER appeared in this episode, no they didn’t talk, no no, I didn’t need Kusanagi anyway, but thankfully Kuniko escaped his idiocy).

While Kuniko tries to make her way to the Diet, Tarsian and his wonderful niece, Joker, are having a game of Chess, during which Tarsian exercises his supreme authority and forces her to the subordinate role, something she clearly resents. He also manages to win the thing (after killing the game at least once cause Joker was silly enough to voice her opinion on Sayoko’s escape -yeah, someone, possibly one of Joker’s henchmen let her go in secret).  It’s interesting to note that he doesn’t want Hiruko to die (you know, the freak reincarnated kid in a pool) or the Atlas Project will be compromised.

The yakuza Overlord

While Kuniko enters the Diet, Atlas throws poison gas missiles at Kuniko’s troops, possibly annihilating them but we didn’t see that yet.  In the Diet, Kuniko finally learns that 1.  Zeus is the Atlas’ A.I. and 2. Her grandma was the first Atlas CEO (woot!)

Tarsian looks normal when he was young. And grandma Hojo was cute O_O Damn, time is cruel...

The moment of truth

And it ends with Kuniko getting furious and frustrated at the revelation.  Sayoko finally reaches Moon Palace but collapses in front of it.

Well, the designs and all that is the same as the rest of Shangri-la, which means some parts are terrific, some parts are kinda weird, especially regarding the face designs, either close up of far shots.

We got new info, yay! So Tarsian was/is the main guy behind Atlas, with Kuniko’s grandma as the first Atlas CEO and Joker is related to him.  Damn, there’s someone higher in the chain of command than her… I thought Tarsian was just some string manipulator behind the scenes but it seems he’s into the whole damn deal.  We also learn that Hiruko’s existence is imperative to Atlas’ existence, although we still don’t know what the hell Hiruko is and how he came to be or what’s the prophecy about, but at least we learned how really calls the shots in Atlas.

It was a nice episode.  Besides the always welcome Kuniko fanservice and epicness, we got actual plot advancement here, which is nice.  The series still has a long way to go so I doubt we’ll be getting too much new information soon, except perhaps grandma’s reasons for abandoning (or getting kicked, who knows) Atlas, which seems it’ll be one of the points of interest of the next episode.  Hopefully the subs will be out earlier that time.

Here's a non-GAR Kuniko image for closure :p

I tend to think that the purpose of Atlas was indeed what was publicly stated, but that Ryouko cares little for it and is distorting it.

On the other hand, perhaps Nagiko intended Atlas to be a fantasy land for otaku (if there’s Godzilla …). The old men of Akiba might not be interested in living in Atlas because they want to live in anime shopping heaven, not in an actual anime. :p

I suppose Nagiko really wanted Atlas to be something nice but apparently SOMETHING happened along the way that caused Nagiko to be fed up and leave since she couldn’t stop it. That’s probably why she WANTS Kuniko to stop the Atlas Project. Not sure but that scenario feels cliche enough to be credible, although Tarsian did mention that he just funded what Nagiko wanted, which is rather strange given the situation.

Man, I LOVE your reviews ! So fun. Thank you very much !

Isn’t Hiruko some kind of god ?
When he was replaced by the little girl in a previous episode, the priests were singing something about the guardians of the Earth and a god-whose-name-was-too-long-to-remember.

TY TY ^^ Although it helps that the anime is fun.

Not sure what Hiruko is really. The only thing close to supernatural we’ve seen in Shangri-la besides Hiruko is the swords resonating and that “voice of prophecy”, so it’s not a too much of magic/etc ridden series. As Tarsian pointed out, if they lose Hiruko, Atlas will be in trouble so apparently he’s not that hard to destroy. Not sure how they manage but they could pull some pseudoscientific explanation from someplace. We still don’t know what Hiruko is in the end.

I find Kuniko’s acrobatics pretty magic and supernatural 😀

You’re probably right but I can’t help but thinking that all the sun/moon/land stuff is entirely mystic……. well ok, I hope so \o/
Think about it, Mikuni alone is supernatural : she can’t see the sun (ok, let’s say that’s a disease), has telepathic skills and can kill people only with her mind. And it would be really hard to give some pseudoscientific explanation for Hiruko’s reincarnations and his strange temple with crazy eyes (reminds me of Lilith’s in Evangelion…). Freakshow !

Let’s see, we have a monkey, two freaks, a geek… This anime is awesome \o/

Well, Mikuni’s ability IS rather strange, as is the whole Hiruko case, true. Mikuni is the Moon supposedly. I doubt they’ll pull THAT much of a pseudoscientific explanation but who knows. As long as it makes sense :p

Some people dropped it cause it was weird or something, but yeah, it’s most of it is fun ^^
